About the role

Digital Skills Teacher (Basic Level)

We’re looking for a patient, supportive volunteer to teach basic digital skills to adults who may have little or no experience using devices or the internet. You’ll help participants build confidence using smartphones, tablets or computers for everyday tasks like sending emails, browsing safely, accessing services or using WhatsApp.

This role is perfect for someone who wants to share their tech know-how to break down digital exclusion and support community empowerment.

Locations: Redbridge, Newham, or Waltham Forest (in-person delivery)

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver simple, step-by-step digital skills sessions
  • Support learners 1-to-1 or in small groups
  • Help people learn tasks like:
  • Using a smartphone or tablet
  • Sending emails and texts
  • Accessing GP services online
  • Using Google, YouTube, Zoom or WhatsApp
  • Understanding internet safety and passwords
  • Encourage participants to practise at their own pace
  • Answer basic questions and build digital confidence
  • Track attendance and share feedback with the coordinator

What skills do I need?

Skills, attributes, experience and qualifications

  • Confident using smartphones, tablets, and basic digital tools
  • Patient, encouraging, and a clear communicator
  • Able to explain things in plain language
  • Friendly, approachable, and respectful of all learning levels
  • Organised and reliable
  • No formal teaching qualification required
  • Any experience in support, tutoring, training, or digital help is welcome
  • We particularly welcome volunteers who speak additional community languages
  • Basic IT knowledge (email, apps, browsers, internet safety)
  • Smartphone and/or laptop for demonstrating tasks
  • Internet access (on-site or portable WiFi)
  • Mobile phone – for team contact or emergencies
  • Need to be 18+
