About the role:

As a Meeter-Greeter at the Togetherness Café, you’ll be the friendly first point of contact for guests from all walks of life. The café is a safe, inclusive community space where people come to connect, relax and access support. Your role is to make everyone feel welcome, especially those who may be isolated, new to the area, or facing language or cultural barriers.

This is a great opportunity to be part of a community-driven initiative that values kindness, respect, and inclusion.

We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds, cultures and ages. You don’t need formal qualifications to apply – what matters most is your attitude, reliability and willingness to support others.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Warmly greet all visitors on arrival
  • Assist with sign-in and basic orientation
  • Help guests feel comfortable and included
  • Engage in friendly conversations to build trust
  • Direct guests to staff, services or resources when needed
  • Support the café’s community feel by promoting positive interactions
  • Where possible, communicate with guests in their preferred language

What skills do I need?

We’re looking for volunteers who are:

  • Friendly and welcoming – a positive, approachable manner is key
  • Good communicators – able to engage with people from different backgrounds
  • Culturally aware and respectful – open-minded and inclusive
  • Reliable and punctual – show up when expected and communicate if unavailable
  • Patient and empathetic – especially with those who may be nervous or isolated
  • Team players – happy to work alongside staff and other volunteers
  • Being able to speak additional community languages (such as Urdu, Arabic, Somali, Polish, Punjabi, Bengali, etc.) is highly valued but not essential.
  • No previous experience is required — full guidance will be provided.
  • However, experience in community settings, customer service, or working with people is a bonus.
  • Mobile phone access: Helpful for staying in touch with the team (WhatsApp or calls)
  • Internet access: Useful for receiving emails or updates, but not essential for this in-person role
  • Commitment to the organisation’s values around inclusion, safeguarding and equality
