Our Befriending Service aims to reduce loneliness and social isolation by providing people with regular, friendly contact and companionship through telephone and online conversations. Volunteer Befrienders offer their time to build a supportive and trusting relationship with someone, helping them feel valued, heard, and more connected.
As a Volunteer Befriender, you will provide companionship through regular phone calls or online conversations. You may chat about everyday life, share interests and experiences, listen to what matters to the person, or simply enjoy a friendly conversation together.
The role is centred on building a positive and meaningful connection, with each befriending relationship shaped around the individual’s interests, preferences, and communication needs. You do not need to be a professional or have specific qualifications — just a willingness to listen, communicate with empathy, be reliable, and make a positive difference to someone’s life.
We’re looking for friendly, compassionate and reliable volunteers who enjoy talking to people and, most importantly, know how to listen. You don’t need any previous befriending experience – what matters most is your ability to offer a warm, welcoming and non-judgemental presence over the phone. Friendly and approachable, with a genuine interest in getting to know others. Good listeners, who can give someone their time and attention. Patient, empathetic and non-judgemental, recognising that everyone has their own story and experiences. Reliable and committed, able to make regular calls and build a consistent friendship over time. Respectful of confidentiality and boundaries, understanding the importance of keeping the relationship professional and appropriate. Willing to learn, complete the relevant training and follow GIVE’s policies and safeguarding procedures. Above all, we’re looking for people who want to make a difference. A regular phone call might seem like a small thing, but to someone experiencing loneliness or isolation, having a friendly voice at the end of the phone can mean so much.
To apply, please send a cover note explaining why you think you would be suitable for this role to [email protected].
