Volunteer Befrienders provide support and friendship to older people who may be feeling lonely or isolated. Face-to-face befriending means you will be visiting an older person in the care home.
What are the benefits of becoming a volunteer?
Befriending can help reduce feelings of social isolation and loneliness, improve mental and physical health, increase confidence and self-esteem, and enhance the quality of life of older people. You can also enrich your own life with new experiences and friendships. You will also gain valuable skills and knowledge that can enhance your personal and professional development.
How much time do I need to commit as a volunteer?
The time commitment varies depending on the needs of the MHA location you are matched with and your availability. Generally, MHA asks for a minimum of one hour per week for at least six months.
What kind of support will I receive as a volunteer?
You will receive ongoing support and guidance from a local coordinator who will match you with an older person, monitor your progress, and provide feedback. You will also have access to online resources, training opportunities, and peer support from other volunteers.

There are four main steps to be completed:
- An informal interview – 15-30 minutes (via Teams)
- DBS check – we will need three ID documents (i.e. passport, driving licence, birth certificate etc.) from you to be able to approve a DBS application. I will give you more details about this in the informal interview.
- Two references – we will need your referees’ name, phone number and email address. We will send them a reference form.
- Training – will consist of an online induction (1 ½ hours via Microsoft Teams) and some online courses (30-45 minutes each, which you can complete in your own time).
