To give young people a voice in shaping their local library service, helping to make it more engaging, inclusive and relevant to their needs. Youth Advisory Panel volunteer provide insight, contribute ideas, and collaborate with library staff to support the development and delivery of youth-focused initiatives.
This role enhances our teen offer anddoes not replace the responsibilities of paid staff.
What You Will Do
Gather feedback from peers about how young people feel about the library, its current events, activities and space, and suggestions for improvements.
Attend a monthly panel meeting to share peer feedback with staff and pitch events or activities for teenagers.
Help plan and deliver pitched events as part of a team, including considering a budget, health and safety issues, promotion, and ensuring their relevance to the Essex Library Service offer more broadly.
Work with other members of the panel to update book and noticeboard displays in the teen area, ensuring front facing stock is appealing and timely for this audience.
Identify stock gaps in current Young Adult stock holding and make stock suggestions on this basis.
Act as an ambassador for the Library amongst peers, promoting the Library Service and its offer in the community.
What You Will Not Do
Have sole responsibility for event planning or delivery.
Manage budgets or the purchase of items on behalf of the Library.
Delete or directly acquire stock.
Use library staff systems or access customer accounts and information.
Handle customer payments or financial transactions.
Manage complaints, challenging behaviour, or safeguarding issues.
Replace or carry out core duties of library staff.
Support and Training
Induction to the role, including health & safety and library processes relevant to the role.
Ongoing support from working alongside and under the guidance of designated library staff at all times.
Skills and Qualities
Friendly, approachable, and confident.
Good communication skills, both written and orally for a variety of audiences.
Reliable and willing to learn.
Ability to work as part of a diverse team, including peers and library staff.
Knowledge of popular YA books desirable but not essential.

Time Commitment
1-2 hours per month attending the Youth Advisory Panel meeting
