Support our team to ensure payroll and financial administration runs smoothly, helping us provide a reliable service that supports disabled people to live independently.

The role involves a range of administrative tasks, including processing information, updating records, scanning and organising documents, preparing correspondence and supporting financial paperwork.

You may help check invoices, contact clients to authorise payments, send monthly statements and support payroll processes, including HMRC returns and PAYE administration. You may also respond to telephone and email enquiries from clients, Personal Assistants and colleagues.

The role involves using systems such as Microsoft Office and Xero, handling confidential information carefully and ensuring records are accurate and up to date.

This is an opportunity to use your finance, payroll or administrative skills while gaining experience within a disability charity.

Benefits

Develop finance and administration skills – Gain practical experience in payroll, financial processes, data management and systems such as Xero within a charity setting. Use your skills to make a difference – Support the services that help disabled people live independently by helping ensure our payroll and financial processes run smoothly. Build confidence and experience – Work as part of a supportive team, develop professional skills and gain valuable experience that can support future employment or personal development.

Practical Considerations

This role is based at our Head Office in Kemp Town, Brighton.

We ask for a regular commitment, with volunteer sessions agreed in advance with the Payroll & Accounts team. The exact days and times can be discussed to find a suitable arrangement.

Travel expenses can be reimbursed in line with our volunteer expenses policy.

We are happy to discuss reasonable adjustments with you, including changes to activities, timings, equipment or any additional support needs.

Support Disabled

As a disability charity, we are committed to making volunteering accessible and welcoming for everyone. We recognise that people may need different types of support to take part, and we are happy to discuss reasonable adjustments before and during your volunteering. Support may include adapting tasks or timings, providing equipment or additional guidance, making changes to communication methods, or considering any access needs. We work with volunteers to understand what will help them feel confident and included in their role. Payroll & Accounts volunteers receive an induction, ongoing support from their volunteer lead and guidance from the wider team. We will support you to learn our systems, understand our processes and build confidence in completing administrative and finance tasks accurately. We value the skills, experience and lived experience that disabled volunteers bring, while welcoming anyone who shares our values and wants to contribute.

What skills do I need?

We are looking for volunteers who are:

  •  Organised, reliable and able to make a regular commitment
  •  Detail-focused and able to work accurately with information and records
  •  Comfortable working with numbers, data and administrative systems
  •  Good communicators, with confidence speaking to clients, Personal Assistants and colleagues
  •  Able to listen carefully and share information accurately
  •  Comfortable using IT systems, including email, Microsoft Office and data entry systems
  •  Able to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately
  •  Patient, approachable and committed to providing a helpful service
  •  Able to work independently and as part of a team
  •  Willing to learn and develop new skills.

Experience of finance, payroll, administration, accounting, Xero or similar systems is useful. Knowledge of Direct Payments is also helpful, but training and support will be provided to help you develop your understanding.
