West Berkshire Museum has an exciting opportunity for volunteers who have an interest in engaging children and their families/carers in activities at the Museum during the school holidays. You will be asked to make visitors feel welcome and to make their visit run smoothly as possible with assisting in fun activities.

The museum is a busy and a well used public space; we are looking for volunteers who are enthusiastic and energetic and who would thrive in this environment.

The opportunity is to play a key role in supporting the Learning & Participation Officer (L&PO) with the development and delivery of the museum's family activities in school holidays.

The following essential tasks include but not limited to:

  • Contributing ideas for activities
  • Liaison with L&PO, museum team and other volunteers
  • Preparing the materials
  • Helping to set up before an activity and clear up after
  • Being part of a small team who delivers the activities
  • Assisting with evaluating the success of the activities

A Family Activities Assistant Volunteer must be prepared to commit within the school holidays and have a good general standard of written and spoken English.

Our commitment is to offer training and regular support and the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people.

2 character references will be required on application.

The Museum is located on the Wharf in Newbury, adjacent to the Kennet & Avon Canal opposite Newbury Library. We are a short walk from Newbury's train and bus stations. The Museum is surrounded by pay on foot and pay and display parking. There are disabled parking bays within the car park in front of the Museum.

What skills do I need?

This opportunity would suit someone who has the ability to communicate with people, enjoys conversations and is able to liaise with the public of all ages. Having a creative mind, being organised and being reliable, having IT knowledge would be desirable as some tasks require this but not essential as training is given.
