Whitley Bay Big Local is looking to recruit additional volunteers for our helpdesk to support our busy community building. Whitley Bay Big Local provides spaces for a range of activities including youth groups, coffee mornings, drama classes and more. The Receptionist/Community Shop Attendant will ensure all building users receive a warm welcome on arrival, support our building users and maintain/manage the community shop.  

Job Description: 

As a volunteer for Whitley Bay Big Local, based at Whitley Bay Hub, you are contributing to the success of a hub for all the community. As a reception/community shop attendant, you will join a friendly team of volunteers who work together to ensure people receive great service when attending Whitley Bay Big Local. We are seeking volunteers who are able to contribute at least 3 hours per week to cover a morning/afternoon shift on the helpdesk/community shop.  


Responsibilities include: 

  • Greeting building users and signposting around the building 
  • Signposting to external services as appropriate 
  • Providing minimal information about our services 
  • Answering the telephone and email inbox and responding to enquiries 
  • Organising surplus stock at the community shop 
  • Processing membership applications and sales at the community shop

You will work as part of a committed team of volunteers who support the organisation to create a hub for all the community. 


We can offer points to spend in the community shop or a free hot drink in the café for each shift worked 


Reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed for each shift worked 


What skills do I need?

Essential experience: 

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate the following qualities: 

  • A positive attitude towards volunteering and supporting people 

Desirable experience: 

As well as meeting the elements outlined in essential experience, we would prioritise candidates who have experience of working

  • in a customer service capacity 
  • with basic telephone, IT and sales systems 

As the successful candidate will be required to work in a community building with children and vulnerable adults, you will be asked to disclose criminal convictions as part of the recruitment process.
