Companion Volunteer

Marie Curie is looking for caring, everyday people to join our Companion Service. Companion volunteers provide one-to-one companionship and support to people with a terminal or life-limiting illness as well as their families; you’ll be part of something truly meaningful - offering support to people in their final stages of life, and to the loved ones around them. The service would not be able to reach those most in need if it was not for the commitment and hard work of the volunteers delivering the service in their local communities. You don’t need to be a healthcare expert or have all the answers. You just need to be a good listener, show up with kindness, and be willing to offer your time.

What you’ll do:

  • Volunteers provide friendship and emotional support; practical support with small tasks; short breaks for carers; and help with signposting for information and support.
  • This role is so helpful in supporting/befriending people who may have become disconnected or isolated due to having a terminal illness.
  • Have a chat, a cuppa, or share some quiet time.
  • Listen to memories, share stories, or talk about everyday things.
  • Support carers or family members by giving them a short break

What skills do I need?

Why you'd be a great fit:

  • Patient and non-judgmental of others
  • Emotionally steady during sensitive moments
  • Commit up to 3 hours p/week
  • Respectful of personal boundaries and confidentiality
  • You will need to be a empathetic and caring person who wants to improve the life of someone who is isolated or alone.
  • You will need to be a good listener and an overall an excellent communicator.
  • Need to be 18+

Location

This opportunity has no specific location e.g. can be carried out anywhere.
