St. Mary Magdalene Church is a large, grade I listed church at the heart of the community in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Ranging from 12th to 17th century, the Church recently completed a 14 month Lottery Heritage funded reawakening project, St. Mary's has a renewed heritage offering telling the story of the community and its people through 800 years of history.

Working with community groups and leaders, the Reawakening project has opened up St. Mary's heritage in a way that it never has been before, with regular tours of the grounds, towers and architecture, as well as community heritage events, conservation projects and more led by a dedicated team of volunteers.

We are looking for new members to join our dedicated and friendly team of welcome volunteers.

As a welcome volunteer you will help us create a friendly and welcoming environment for visitors to the church. The first point of contact with visitors, this is a great opportunity to work in an active heritage environment whilst building a working relationship with a fantastic team and community.

Tasks might include:

Providing a warm welcome to visitors.

Giving information about events, timings and the sights available to see in the church.

Promoting parts of the church's heritage offering such as guidebooks and guided tours.

Keeping visitors informed of the church's facilities such as the cafe and donation points.

Taking demographic information of footfall volume.

Applicants will be required to provide two references and may be required to undertake safeguarding training before commencing in the role.

What skills do I need?

This role will suit someone who has a passion for local, architectural, medieval or civil war era history. This role is ideally suited for somebody with great communication skills and a drive to make heritage welcoming and accessible to as many people as possible.

This role will be of interest if you:

- Are looking to develop skills for a career in heritage.

- Are passionate about developing ties between heritage and community spaces. 

- Are looking to find new ways to engage with community.
