Could you spot a powerful argument, a brave performance or a future leader in the making?

The English-Speaking Union is looking for enthusiastic volunteer judges to support our national speaking and debating competitions.

As a volunteer judge, you’ll listen to young people as they debate big ideas, deliver speeches and perform Shakespeare — then offer constructive feedback that helps them grow in confidence, communication and creativity.

Why volunteer?  Make a real difference to young people’s confidence and communication skills.

Be inspired by fresh ideas, bold performances and lively debate.

Choose the competitions, dates and locations that work for you.

Gain judging, feedback and safeguarding guidance through simple online training.

Join a friendly community that believes every young person deserves to be heard.

What you’ll do: You’ll join a judging panel of up to three people for one or more of our competitions: the Mace Debating Competition, the Public Speaking Competition and the Performing Shakespeare Competition. You’ll assess performances, discuss decisions with fellow judges and give supportive feedback that young people can use straight away.

Time commitment:  Volunteer once, twice or throughout the competition season — it’s up to you. Opportunities run from November to June, usually on weekday afternoons from 4pm.  A typical commitment is one day, with around four hours needed. There are opportunities in and around North Tyneside, as well as across England and Wales.

Training and support:  No previous judging experience is needed. You’ll complete a 30–40-minute online training session, supported by a clear competition handbook. Our Supporter Services team will also be on hand to answer questions and help you feel confident before the day.

Ready to help young people speak up and stand out? Register your interest today using the ESU volunteer sign-up form: https://www.esu.org/programmes/volunteer-sign-up-form/
