Register your interest

We are looking for volunteers to sing with us at our weekly prison sessions in Surrey: HMP High Down and HMP Downview.

You will be singing with our team of exceptional musicians, and the prisoners every week throughout the year. The Liberty Choir team will provide you with all the guidance you need for your first visit.

With your help, we can support even more prisoners as they serve their sentences. We know that attending Liberty Choir has a significant impact on reducing reoffending rates. Singing together helps participants develop valuable life skills, such as learning to appreciate themselves and others. Over time, participants form new social bonds while improving literacy, maths, music appreciation and much more. The sessions are FUN as well as rewarding.

Liberty Choir is a national charity bringing members of the public into prisons across the UK to sing with our choir of musicians, volunteers and prisoners every week. Our sessions are designed to build prisoners’ self-confidence and provide access to new social networks in the wider community.

With your help, we can support even more prisoners through their sentence and help them get a second chance at life through the power of music and community.

If you live in the Surrey area and would like to learn more about the opportunity, please contact us at [email protected], marking the subject SUTTON PRISONS VOLUNTEER.

“I’ve not had a visitor for six years. The choir is my social community” (Carl, prisoner)

“I have been attending Coldingley since January 2023, and have noticed a monumental change in a couple of the prisoners who started at the same time as me. Those that disrupted now engage each other; it is quite wonderful” (Nikki, volunteer)

What skills do I need?

Volunteers need an open mind and a non-judgemental approach to prisons and inmates. A supportive, positive and caring attitude is essential.

No special skills are required, but a love of music and singing are important.

You don't need to have a great voice or be able to read music.
