The Role: 

As Volunteer Gardener - Horticultural you will work within the Garden Team to help care, maintain and improve where possible the appearance, presentation and plant health of specific areas of the Pleasure Garden Grounds at Petworth. 

The landscaped park and pleasure grounds of Petworth are Grade I listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens

Ideally this role would suit:

Horticultural students working towards RHS Level 2 looking for practical experience in an estate garden setting and/or

Keen gardeners who are looking to practice plant husbandry & care in a 36-acre majestic garden setting

Please note: At this stage we are looking for an expression of interest in this role and would aim to commence volunteering on an mutually agreed date

We ask that you volunteer for 1 full day per week and live within 20 miles of Petworth.

What skills do I need?

Upkeep of the formal boarders including the following:

  • Undertake gardening duties, e.g. dead-heading, weeding, clipping, pruning, sweeping, raking, planting and propagation
  • As your skills develop, being a friendly face for visitors to the garden and answering any questions they may entail from plant questions to general supported by the garden team.
  • You are important in making sure things run as smoothly and safely as possible – this includes getting to know National Trust health and safety and evacuation procedures.
  • You may also be asked to assist with events or education about the gardens.
  • Engaging with the public via property events and education.
  • Having a jolly good time outdoors!

We offer flexible working days to suit individuals outside personal commitments

We have traditionally four annual social events for the Gardens & Outdoors Volunteering Team being: Spring Tea Party, Summer BBQ, Autumn Curry, Christmas Party besides the several ongoing social events and trips planned by the events team for all Volunteers
