Special constables are volunteer police officers who play a vital role in our mission to make London safer. By investing your free time, you can make a real difference to our city. You'll have the same powers as a regular police constable and will get a tremendous amount of pride from giving back to the community.
Those committed to taking on this exciting and rewarding role will need to complete a minimum of 200 hours annually, equating to 16 hours per month. You will be based on one of the 12 Basic Command Units (BCU) that are located across the 32 London boroughs. Specials wear the same uniform and have the same powers and responsibilities as regular police officers and enjoy a variety of roles. They carry out duties such as:
The Metropolitan Special Constabulary (MSC) Foundation Course
This will teach you about the various aspects of police work, including basic law, police procedures, officer safety, people skills and emergency life saving techniques.
Your initial training course runs for 23 days across 13 weekends, or can be completed as an intensive Monday to Friday course over four and a half weeks. Throughout your training, you will develop a number of core skills including:
