Trustees have overall control of the Charity and are responsible for making sure it’s doing what it was set up to do. Trustees oversee both the OFLAC Day Service and the Cafe.

Trustees make sure the Charity is running well and this includes ensuring the Charity:

  • Has the money it needs
  • Spends its money sensibly, on the activities it was raised for
  • Follows the law, including preparing reports and accounts to send to the Charity Commission
  • Doesn’t break the rules in its governing document (its constitution, trust deed or articles)

Trustees of the Charity may take on all or most of the work of running the Charity. Trustees may delegate the day-to-day operations to the staff.

A trustee will use their skills and experience to make sure the Charity runs efficiently, but trustees are allowed to get advice from external sources like solicitors or other experts if they need to.

All trustees make decisions about their Charity collectively, working as a team. Decisions don’t usually need to be unanimous – so long as the majority of trustees agree.

You and the other trustees must:

  • Follow the law and the rules in the Charity’s governing document
  • Act responsibly and only in the interests of the Charity
  • Use reasonable care and skill
  • Make well-informed decisions, taking advice when needed to

As a trustee you will have a valuable role to play and your personal skills and experiences are important. These may come from a professional or personal perspective. A full and varied range of inputs are essential to ensure the Charity meets its aims and objectives.

What could I be doing?

Meetings held with the full Trustee Board, including the Managers and Day Service Members' Reps, usually on Monday evenings. Your role will be to contribute ideas and to discussions around the Day Service and Cafe management structure and financial status. The specific tasks you do  outside of meetings, if any, will depend on your expertise and interests.

What skills do I need?

A trustee will use their skills and experience to make sure the Charity runs efficiently. They must be:

  • Enthusiastic
  • Committed
  • Understanding of business and management (desirable not essential)
  • Empathic of adults with Learning Disabilities
