It's believed that 8 children in an average class leave primary school unable to read well
ABC to read are working to change that! We train and support volunteers so that they can be placed with a local primary school and confidently work with children as reading mentors to develop their skills, build up their confidence and encourage a love of reading.
Working with the same children each week not only provides a huge impact on the children's progress but is incredibly rewarding for the volunteer as you get to know them and see their love of reading develop
In relaxed one to one sessions, our volunteers read, talk and play games gradually building up the child's confidence and practising the skills they are learning in class.
Our volunteers use ABC provided resources focused around the interests of the children to help them develop a love of books and focus on praise and encouragement of what they can do and when they've tried hard.
It is our goal that every child leaves every session with a feeling of success, looking forward to their next one.
If you are successful in your application, you will be placed in a school in Berkshire.
It is important that our volunteers have the following qualities:
Must be literate
Love reading
Able to easily relate to children
Be a clear communicator and a good listener
Understand they have a responsibility for safeguarding.

As our volunteers go into schools, they dictate when they would like the volunteer to go in. It is always in the afternoon, between 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm on any week day.
