The Locks Heath Puma First Team First Aider plays an important role in supporting player welfare and safety within the senior section of Locks Heath Pumas. Working alongside coaches, team management and club volunteers, you will help ensure that appropriate first aid support is available during matches and, where possible, training sessions.

This role is ideal for someone studying or interested in sports therapy, physiotherapy, sports rehabilitation, nursing, paramedicine, medicine or another healthcare profession, who is looking to gain valuable hands-on experience working pitch-side with an adult rugby team.

Time Commitment

This role is primarily focused on the senior men's section and requires availability for Saturday afternoon home and away fixtures throughout the rugby season. There may also be opportunities to attend training sessions or support at club events, but these are optional.

We understand that volunteers have work, study and family commitments, and we don't expect you to be available every week. However, we are looking for someone who can offer a regular commitment throughout the season and communicate their availability in advance to ensure the team has appropriate medical cover.

Main Responsibilities

Provide Pitch-Side First Aid

  • Attend senior home matches to provide first aid support for players.
  • Respond promptly and appropriately to injuries occurring during matches.
  • Assess injuries within the limits of your training and determine when further medical treatment is required.
  • Administer first aid in accordance with your qualifications and current best practice.
  • Ensure player welfare is always the priority.
  • Report Injuries and Head Injuries appropriately

Support Player Preparation

  • Assist with pre-match taping and strapping where competent to do so.
  • Help prepare and maintain the first aid kit and medical equipment.
  • Monitor players returning from injury where appropriate.
  • Support coaches in promoting player welfare and safe participation.

Work as Part of the Match Day Team

  • Work closely with coaches, captains and team management throughout the day.
  • Communicate clearly regarding player injuries and fitness to continue playing.
  • Record and report significant injuries in line with club procedures where required.
  • Help promote a safe, positive and inclusive environment for players, officials and spectators.

What skills do I need?

We're looking for someone who is calm under pressure, enjoys working as part of a team and has an interest in sports injury management.

Ideally you will have:

  • A recognised First Aid qualification (Sports First Aid or Emergency First Aid at Work would be advantageous).
  • The willingness to complete additional, rugby specific training.
  • An interest in sports therapy, physiotherapy, sports rehabilitation, nursing, medicine, paramedicine or a related field.
  • Confidence communicating with players, coaches and other volunteers.
  • The ability to remain calm and make sensible decisions in challenging situations.
  • Basic knowledge of sports taping and strapping, or a willingness to learn.
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • A reliable, approachable and professional manner.
  • A commitment to player welfare and confidentiality.
