Next Chapter is a domestic abuse charity working across the areas of Tendring, Colchester, Maldon, Chelmsford, Braintree & Uttlesford. We provide free and confidential services to support people who are currently experiencing, or have previously experienced, domestic abuse. 

We are passionate about ensuring that every person has the opportunity to live their life free from domestic abuse 

As a 1-1 Practical Support Volunteer, you will help survivors manage the everyday challenges they face while rebuilding their lives after domestic abuse. 

From filling in forms and making phone calls, to navigating services and attending appointments, your support will play a vital role in helping survivors gain independence, reduce stress, and move forward with confidence. This support will be adhoc and will be requested by practitioners who will monitor and continue to hold the case open for active support which may involve ongoing risk.

What skills do I need?

Essential 

 • Ability to work on own initiative 

• A practical, hands-on approach and willingness to support with a range of everyday tasks 

• Friendly, welcoming manner 

• Good communication skills • Understanding of issues surrounding confidentiality and safeguarding 

• Working in compliance with policies and procedures 

• A sincere desire to help people to achieve their goals 

• Ability to create a positive supportive relationship with the client 

• Non- judgmental • Strong listening skills 

• Practical problem-solving skills and ability to suggest options and alternatives 

• Sensitivity to persons of different educational, economic, cultural or racial backgrounds 

• Ability to maintain boundaries 

• Willingness to undertaken relevant training

• A good sense of humour 

• Flexible approach with basic IT skills
