Schoolreaders is a national literacy charity. We find and match volunteers with local primary schools to support children in improving their reading and comprehension skills. Current statistics show that 1 in 4 children leave primary school without reaching the expected standards in reading and we work with schools to offer free additional support to these children.
Our volunteers visit schools on a weekly basis and listen to children read in a 1:1 environment. On top of improving their reading skills, reading with a volunteer allows children to develop conversational and social skills as well as build their confidence. In addition to offering much needed reading support for children within schools, volunteering can help to combat isolation and loneliness amongst the local community and our volunteers tell us their visits to schools are often the highlight of their week. Indeed, lots of volunteers become invaluable members of the school community itself.
There are no specific qualification required for this role. Volunteers need to have a good level of spoken and written English, be over 18 and be able to commit to at least one year of volunteering as it is over the course of a year that the most progress is made by children in their reading however holidays can be taken during the time of volunteering. DBS checks will be undertaken by the schools volunteers are matched with.
This opportunity has no specific location e.g. can be carried out anywhere.
