The Cancer Awareness Project aims to increase awareness of cancer across the London Boroughs of Ealing and Hounslow. The project seeks to start open and positive conversations about cancer, helping to reduce stigma, improve understanding, and encourage people to talk confidently about cancer risk, symptoms, and screening with family, friends, and healthcare professionals. Working closely with local communities, the project will raise awareness of key cancer risk factors, with a particular focus on tobacco-related cancers and bowel cancer. It will promote healthier lifestyle choices, including smoking cessation, increase understanding of bowel screening, and encourage people to recognise signs and symptoms early and seek medical advice promptly. Through community engagement, outreach events, partnerships, and the support of trained Cancer Champions, the project will empower residents with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their health and access available support and services.

Purpose of the Role

Cancer Champions are community volunteers who play an important role in raising awareness of cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and screening within Ealing and Hounslow. They help share trusted health information, encourage conversations about cancer, and support local people to access relevant services and resources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage with members of the public through friendly, informative conversations about cancer awareness and prevention and flyering.
  • Support community events, awareness campaigns, information stalls, and promotional activities across Ealing and Hounslow.
  • Reinforce campaign messages through conversations with local people and community outreach.
  • Raise awareness of tobacco related cancers, bowel cancer, and the importance of recognising signs and symptoms early.
  • Encourage healthy lifestyle choices, including stopping smoking, and promote participation in NHS cancer screening programmes where appropriate.
  • Distribute health promotion materials and signpost people to local services and sources of support.
  • Represent the project professionally and respectfully, ensuring information shared is accurate and evidence based.
  • Provide feedback from community engagement activities to help improve future campaigns and outreach.

What skills do I need?

We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and communities. We would particularly love to hear from people who speak different languages, as being able to communicate with residents in their preferred language helps us reach more people and ensure our messages are accessible to the diverse communities of Ealing and Hounslow. No previous experience is required.

Skills and Qualities

  • Friendly, approachable, and confident communicating with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Passionate about improving community health and reducing health inequalities.
  • Good listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Reliable and able to work as part of a team.
  • Willing to undertake training and follow project guidance.

Commitment

Cancer Champions will volunteer at community events and engagement activities until April 2027. Flexible opportunities will be available.
