Sussex Emmaus is a charity that empowers people to overcome homelessness for good. We provide people with a stable home and life-changing, tailored support.

We’re here for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. We see the person and their strengths, and help them get their life back on track, based on the future they want to create. As part of a nationwide movement of local Emmaus charities, we equip people with valuable skills, training and work experience to achieve their goals.

As a Gardening Volunteer, you’ll play a hands-on role in maintaining and developing our outdoor spaces. Our gardens and growing areas are an important part of life at Sussex Emmaus, contributing to wellbeing, sustainability and the community environment.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Helping to care for the polytunnel and other growing spaces alongside companions and other volunteers
  • Assisting with seasonal tasks such as sowing, harvesting and preparing beds
  • Helping to develop an annual gardening plan

Benefits

  • Reasonable travel expenses and lunch in the community kitchen is available for volunteers working minimum shifts of 4 hours.
  • Learn new skills and get hands on experience
  • Help to contribute and  work alongside a purpose driven team

Practical Considerations

Work may be physical.

What skills do I need?

  • An interest in gardening or outdoor work (experience is helpful but not essential)
  • Willingness to work as part of a team alongside companions, other volunteers and staff
  • A positive, can-do attitude and reliability
  • Ability to carry out light to moderate physical tasks
